Non-Surgical Gum Treatment

Gum disease has been the topic of ongoing discussions between dentists and their patients for years now. With the discovery that gum disease is indicated as a factor in a large number of chronic, concerning health conditions, this subject has taken on a new level of importance.

More than 80 percent of American adults live with some degree of gum disease. Caused by harmful bacteria that naturally live in the mouth, gum disease begins very unobtrusively, as gingivitis. Catching the condition in this early stage is paramount to reversal, and the return to better oral health. The problem is, without ongoing dental care that includes six-month examinations it can be difficult to detect this early stage of gum disease. Typically, the only symptoms may be:

  • Slightly red, irritated gum tissue.
  • Gum tissue is not smooth and shiny.
  • Gums bleed when brushing or flossing.
  • Bad breath or a bad taste.

All of these symptoms can be easily missed, or readily dismissed. Make no mistake; bleeding gums are not normal, even if you brush with a heavy hand.

The standard of care in dentistry has been to remove the bacteria that collect on teeth and form with saliva and food particles. This substance, plaque, harbors millions of tiny microorganisms that secrete toxic, acid waste that destroys gum tissue through infection. Removal of this substance requires addressing areas both above and below the gum line. Called root planing and scaling, this treatment is only somewhat effective. On its own, this procedure is only a temporary fix.

At Smile Brighter Willoughby Hills, we provide non-invasive, non-surgical gum disease treatment as often as possible. We often find that people respond to our treatment options quickly, eliminating the need for further, more aggressive procedures.

Dr. Stern is a certified Perio-Protect provider, having undergone the necessary training to provide non-surgical gum disease treatment in Willoughby Hills. This innovative system addresses the bacteria that cause gum disease so that their numbers decrease quickly.

Perio-protect is a great accompaniment to the physical removal of plaque, because this treatment delivers a solution deep into periodontal pockets where bacteria is rapidly reproduced. Solutions are customized for patient needs, with the most common solution including oxygenating and oxidizing agents. Those with oxidization power chemically remove bacteria, and clean out the wounds in gum tissue.

Perio-protect is a system with which we provide ongoing gum disease management, promoting a healthy oral balance.

More advanced forms of periodontal disease may require additional treatment. Dr. Stern and our staff expertly provide gum therapy using FDA-cleared laser technology for this purpose. Laser gum treatment in our Willoughby Hills dental office gently and accurately removes diseased tissue, and promotes the growth of healthy, new gum tissue.

Your oral health is our main concern. In many cases, gum disease can be handled without the need for surgical treatment. Contact us today for your consultation and non-surgical gum treatment.

Video Transcript The traditional treatments for gum disease are scaling and receding which are deep cleaning if there is a lot of debris or a lot of hard plaque and tartar that’s got to be removed.

These can be removed very comfortably often only with anesthetic liquid that’s gently applied to the gums.
If its really involved it may be numbed like that for a dental procedure.
These treatments were developed by a microbiologist who was also a dentist, looking for something better than periodic deep cleaning because the bacteria do come back.

There is something like a mouth guard that fits over the teeth and gums very securely and you can put into this mouth guard or tray solutions that kill bacteria.

You can kill the bacteria very effectively wearing it as little as once a day for some cases, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day for 15 – 20 minutes in others.
Gum disease is a big deal its accounting now for several different maladies including Alzheimer disease, because they have found oral bacteria in the amyloid plaque in the brain of people that died of Alzheimer’s, they have found oral bacteria in coronary arteries of people that are being by-passed the arteries have clogged up with the same bacteria from the oral source.

We can find out what's going on the mouth bacterially or medically if you are tagged as being suspectable to some of the various disease that has oral implications.

If somebody gets a deep cleaning and wears the trays as prescribed they have a much lower incidence of occurrence of oral and gum disease.

The actual tray is called the imperial tray and is fabricated by 3 FDA approved laboratories in the entire USA
